UMO & Ibrahim Maalouf

In November, UMO has yet another international guest, as the orchestra plays a concert with one of the most interesting names in jazz, Lebanese-born Parisian Ibrahim Maalouf. In his music the virtuoso breaks conventional boundaries, as he draws on his cultural background and combines home regions’ melancholic mindscapes with Arabic influences, jazz, hip hop, cinematic music and even rock. Maalouf has been called the new voice of jazz trumpet and has received wide acclaim for his expressive style of playing and masterful improvisations.
Maalouf began playing and composing music already as a child and has recorded altogether eight albums. The newest ones, Red & Black Light and Kalthoum, were published in 2015. He has also composed music for symphony orchestras, choirs and movies, including the biographical film about Yves Saint Laurent released in 2015. He has performed with the likes of Sting, Elvis Costello, Oxmo Puccino and Amadou & Mariam. Maalouf has also received many awards for his accomplishments in jazz and classical music.
The concert features Ibrahim Maalouf’s music arranged for big band by Jim McNeely, a masterly pianist, composer and arranger. McNeely has made these arrangements originally for hr-Bigbandfrom Frankfurt. The programme also includes some recent arrangements of songs from Maalouf’s latest albums.
