Drummer Tatu Rönkkö’s solo piece I Play Your Kitchen will invade the kitchens of five Helsinki-residents.
We Jazz 2014 is looking to turn five private kitchens into venues for an extraordinary commissioned jazz piece. Tatu Rönkkö, the drummer for Elifantree and Efterklang, visits five homes in Helsinki and plays the solo piece I Play Your Kitchen using the instruments that each particular kitchen has to offer. The concerts will be organised from 9 to 13 December, and the application is open on http://wejazz.fi/2014 until 20 November. The winners will be selected jointly by the We Jazz production team and the artist himself and announced on 21 November on the We Jazz webpage and notified by email. Half of the capacity of each venue will be reserved for the resident’s own guests, while the remainder of the seats will form a part in We Jazz’s ticket sales. The resident can either give away their share of the tickets or sell them at a price corresponding to the official ticket price (15 €), in the latter case the resident will be entitled to keep the possible profits.
Drummer-percussionist Tatu Rönkkö first put the idea into practice already a year ago, in autumn 2013, when he started a series of monthly improvised solo concerts in people’s kitchens. Gathering people in the warm domesticity of home – a place far from the conventional concert milieu – I Play Your Kitchen challenges the traditional roles of the performer and the audience. Each concert is a unique experience, inseverable from the time when and space where it takes place. Rönkkö aims at finding the characteristic sound of each kitchen by improvising on pans, pots, foodstuffs and domestic gadgets.
I Play Your Kitchen is one of the four commissioned works to be presented at We Jazz 2014. We Jazz 2014, organised 8 – 13 December, will take place around Helsinki at seven different venues, presenting both Finnish and international top jazz. Part of the programme consists of a number of commissioned works that challenge the traditional concept of the jazz concert.
