Buba Wii Aa and We Jazz DJs are to entertain us in a preview event for the upcoming We Jazz 2015 festival. The party takes place on 5 December at Helsinki's Kahvila Sävy.
We Jazz takes a headstart on the upcoming jazz festival, going by the same title and kicking off on 7 December, on the preceding Saturday 5 December at Kahvila Sävy. The café was successfully launched as a haunt for jazz at last year’s festival already, and this year it will feature as a venue for a number of concerts, starting from the preview event. The said event takes place at 10-16 and the programme features the up-and-coming trio, Buba Wii Aa, whose debut EP Taco Taco Taco! was released by We Jazz on cassette and digitally only a few months ago. The trio is formed by organ player Mikael Myrskog, bassist Eero Seppä and drummer Sami Nummela. In addition to the trio, the DJ collective We Jazz DJs will be entertaining us with their select jazz vinyl. At the event, the audience has the chance to meet the production team behind the festival and a number of artists who will be playing live during the week. The pre-event is free of charge.
The purpose of the preview event is to give the audience a sneak peek at the actual festival – a tradition that began last year. Kahvila Sävy, located in Aleksis Kiven katu, features as a festival venue now for the second year, making it a suitable place from where to kick this year's 'jazz installation' off. The café will be playing host to four festival concerts altogether, seeing this year’s winner of We Jazz Rising Star prize, Bowman Trio, Jukka Perko Jazztet and the legendary sax player Juhani Aaltonen with his trio take the stage in the course of the week. The Jazz kiinnostaa radio show, running on Radio Helsinki, will also be broadcast live from the brunch taking place at the café on the closing day of the festival. The brunch is already sold out.
"The idea for the preview came about spontaneously. We were regretting that Buba Wii Aa, who just made a fantastic Finnish tour, was not booked as one of this year’s We Jazz guests,” says Matti Nives, the artistic director of We Jazz. “So the solution was to organise a preview event – a free, nice and relaxed way for the audience to get in the mood for the festival and a handy way for us to have Buba Wii Aa among the performers. The scheme was put into practice in a short time and Kahvila Sävy – a haunt that we all are fond of so much – was booked as the venue.”
At the We Jazz 2015 preview event there will be available copies of the well-received 88-page We Jazz magazine, launched at Helsinki Design Week last September. Buba Wii Aa’s debut EP will also be available for purchase – as well as tickets to the We Jazz 2015 festival.

We Jazz is the largest-scale jazz festival to take place in Helsinki. Organised this year for the third time and spanning the second week of December, the festival features such international stars as Vijay Iyer Trio and the German jazz legend Gunter Hampel and such Finnish top groups as Timo Lassy Band, Teddy’s West Coasters, Juhani Aaltonen Trio, Verneri Pohjola Quartet and Jukka Perko Jazztet. Some of the new experiments to be seen include a tram concert, loft jazz house party and a series of concerts at the performing artist’s studio flat.
