More compositions are expected to enter the competition for jazz composers hailing from Southwest Finland.

Turku Jazz Orchestra arranges a big band composition competition for composers hailing from or based in South-West Finland. Organised now for the first time, the contest aims at putting South-Western Finnish jazz composers on the map and presenting them to a larger audience. Three winning pieces will be awarded with prices of 1000 €, 500 € and 300 €.

The competition is open until 26 November 2015, and the contestants compete anonymously in the qualification round. Finalists will be chosen jointly by Vellu Halkosalmi, the artistic director and conductor of Turku Jazz Orchestra, and vibraphonist Severi Pyysalo.

The final concert will take place on Wednesday 3 February 2016 at 7:00 at Logi 3 hall in Logomo (Köydenpunojankatu 14, Turku).

The winner will be selected by a jury, whose members are Severi Pyysalo, Jussi Fredriksson, a jazz artist and President of the Turku-based Flame Jazz concert series, and - as the chair - the Teosto-awarded jazz artist Mikko Hassinen. The audience has a chance to participate by voting for their favourite.

The rules can be found on www.tjo.fi/tapahtuma/savellyskilpailu (in Finnish only).

The competition is supported by the Varsinais-Suomi Regional Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation.
