Finland’s second oldest jazz festival celebrates its half-centennial! Turku Jazz has delighted music fans with its unique atmosphere since 1969.
The festival starts today at Café Tiljan with Niklas winter, who also celebrates his own 50th anniversary this year.
Nostalgic atmosphere is guaranteed tomorrow on 7th March as the true legends of jazz are seen on the main stage of Åbo Svenska Teater: Eero Koivistoinen with his quartet, which performed in the first Turku jazz happening in 1969, and Billy Cobham, American drummer-legend, who is celebrating his 75th anniversary
The weekend’s main venue is Logomo’s Teatro and its three halls which create a versatile music oasis. On Friday 8 March the history of Turku Jazz is presented with Turku Jazz All Star ensemble, that features earlier year’s Turku Jazz artists and big band Turku Jazz Orchestra with conductor Outi Tarkiainen. Friday night ends with Italian guitarist Nicola Conte and his Spiritual Galaxy ensemble.
Saturday’s star’s include Jarmo Saari Republic and their guest saxophonist Timo Lassy, saxophonist Trygve Seim from Norway and Turku Jazz artist of the year Ilkka Arola with his band. The long-awaited co-project of Aili Ikonen and Jukka Perkko Avara is also heard in Turku on Saturday.
On Sunday the festival ends with jazz brunch and final jam jession at Tiirikkala.
