Taking place in the courtyard of brewery restaurant Koulu on 18-21 August, Turku Jazz Festival has confirmed the first acts of this year’s festival: Dalindèo, Finnish Jazz Federation Jubilee Orchestra and the Turku Jazz Artist of the Year are to take to the stage on Friday 19 August. The programme will be released in its entirety at the turn of April.
Turku Jazz Festival fulfils the City of Turku with fresh jazz offerings in late August. Finland’s second-oldest jazz festival will be organised now for the third time in the summer, with the main concerts taking place in the courtyard of brewery restaurant Koulu. The four-day festival is now organised as a part of the new project, Jazz City Turku, which aims at creating a sustainable basis for a vibrant jazz life in the old capital.
The outdoor stage, Aura Stage, will play host to three Finnish top groups on Friday 19 August. The night will be kicked off by the Turku Jazz Artist of the year – a title granted to a successful local jazz artist annually. This year’s selection will be announced in May. The Finnish Jazz Federation, that celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, has assembled a special Jubilee Orchestra out of Yrjö-awardees, and they will be performing after the Turku Jazz Artist of 2016. The night will be closed by cult group Dalindèo who have just issued their fourth album.
The Finnish Jazz Federation Jubilee Orchestra, led by saxophonist Mikko Innanen, offers flashbacks to the history of Finnish jazz by playing the music of Yrjö-awarded artists. Besides Innanen, the group is composed of guitarist Teemu Viinikainen, pianist Kari Ikonen, bassist Ulf Krokfors and drummer Teppo Mäkynen – all Yrjö-awardees.
Dalindèo, captained by composer Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen, issued their fourth album this April. Slavic Souls does not abandon the style that they established on their previous effort, the celebrated and Emma-awarded Kallio: “SURF-JAZZ-TANGO-EXTRAVAGANZA”. A compound of such many genres that it has become a genre in its own right – represented by Dalindèo only.
