Tuomas Paukku Scription represents the active forefront of the young Finnish jazz generation and it interprets its leader’s distinctive and climactic music with compelling fire. Scription’s music is strongly based on modern jazz impressionism and post-bop but it seeks new landscapes and dimensions boldly stretching the boundaries of the old traditions.
Tuomas Paukku (b.1984) has been especially active composer and band leader during his 15-year career. In recent years one of the most significant groups among his numerous ensembles was Tuomas Paukku Description, which he formed with his Swedish student friends. Their applauded debut album was released in 2016 but now the torch has been passed to new Tuomas Paukku Scription, which is full of young Finnish jazz talent.
In addition to his own music projects, Paukku has been raising Jyväskylä’s profile as a jazz city by arranging high level Jazz Jkl Live concert series. The series presents top Finnish jazz of the day and has settled its place in the bustling city. The operation has been highly praised and gained interest both with the audience and the performers, which clearly tells of the void that prevailed among the event organizing in Jyväskylä.
Pianist Artturi Rönkä (b.1990) is a versatile composer and arranger, whose work has been performed by UMO Jazz Orchestra, Dutch Metropol Orkest, Espoo Big Band, Turku Jazz Orchestra and Turku Philharmonic Orchestra. Rönkä won the Esko Linnavalli big band composing contest in 2011 and Swedish Jazzverk composing contest in 2012. Rönkä’s own AR Quartet was successfully placed second in Belgian Jazz Hoeilaart contest and after releasing their debut album they were granted with We Jazz collective’s We Jazz Raising Star award.
Helsinki-based Janne Tuovinen (b.1986) is originally from Iisalmi. At present he finishes his studies at the Sibelius Academy’s jazz music department. Tuovinen, who was awarded as the best soloist of the Young Nordic Jazz Comets contest in 2013, is reckoned among the lead double bassists in Finnish jazz. He leads his own Jean Eriks ensemble and regurlaly performs with Nossa Bossa group and with his spouse, Carolina Wendelin’s singer-songwirter ensemble. Tuovinen has performed with Ricky-Tick Big Band, UMO Jazz Orchestra and Jukka Perko among others.
Drummer Tomi Saikkonen (s.1982) is a sought-after drummer and teacher. He has graduated as music educator from Helsinki’s Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in 2010. Helsinki-based musician regularly performs with Samuli Edelmann & Orkestra Suora Lähetys. Saikkonen is also part of numerous ensembles; Aapo Heinonen Quintet, Soul Valpio Band, Kadi Quartet and Antti Utriainen Trio among others.
