This summer, saxophonist Timo Lassy will be as busy as ever. In addition to the upcoming concerts in Finland, he visited Germany last week and the next stop in the Continent is Brindisi, Italy. At a number of gigs the sax man is joined by Joyce Elaine Yuille on vocals, and he will also give duo performances with pianist Georgios Kontrafouris. Also, a new album is the making.
Timo Lassy, one of Finland's leading jazz artists of the moment, started his summer by giving two performances in Germany, at the celebrated A-Trane Club in Berlin and on the Elbjazz Festival’s main stage in Hamburg. In the upcoming summer months Lassy’s band is joined by a dazzling guest from the United States, Joyce Elaine Yuille, on vocals. Last year, she performed with Lassy at the inaugural We Jazz Festival in December in Helsinki. Yuille will feature with Lassy’s band in Helsinki, Oulu and Tampere.
This summer, Lassy is also to do two duo gigs with his trusted pianist and organist Georgios Kontrafouris first at Viapori Jazz and at Tinos Jazz Festival in Greece. The original Timo Lassy band will perform at Holland’s Scheldejazz and on the Finnish soil at Ruisrock in Turku, at Porvoo Jazz Festival and at Jazz Finland showcase event in Helsinki next September.
Timo Lassy’s recent projects include composing the score for Samuli Valkama’s film, Ei kiitos, and performing with Scandinavian All Stars at Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta. He also featured as UMO Jazz Orchestra’s soloist in a collaborative project with composer Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen last May.
Productive as always, Lassy is currently preparing a new album, which is due to be released in early 2015. His latest album, Live With Lassy, was a live recording, released in a limited double vinyl format at the We Jazz Festival 2013.
