Teosto's survey maps reasons for uneven gender distribution in the music industry - why do so few women end up making music themselves?

As many as 80 percent of Finnish composers, lyricists and arrangers who write music are men. Over the years, the share of women among music creators has increased very slowly. Now Teosto has launched a project that maps the reasons why so few women or nonbinary musicians end up making music themselves.

In addition to Teosto, Elements Music, Finnish Jazz Federation, The Conservatory Association of Finland, Finnish Music Creators, The Finnish Music Publishers Association, the Association of Finnish Music Schools, Finnish Composers, the Sibelius Academy of the Arts University, Warner Music Finland Oy and Yleisradio are involved in the project.

The anonymous survey is aimed at both those who have already worked in the music industry for a longer period of time, as well as those studying music or young people who are otherwise interested in music. The survey maps the career path of music, the opportunities offered by the environment, treatment within the music industry and experiences of inequality in the industry. The survey is supplemented by telephone interviews.
