The November edition of Jussi Lampela Nonet’s concert series at Kanneltalo is entitled “A Hint of Blues”. Guitarist Teemu Viinikainen features as the eponymous composer-arranger’s guest.
Jussi Lampela Nonet, a nine-piece of A-listing Finnish jazzers with composer-arranger Jussi Lampela at the helm, present a three-concert series at Kanneltalo this autumn. In the second concert they are joined by the master of the jazz guitar, Teemu Viinikainen. One of the key faces in the Finnish jazz scene, Viinikainen has made a long career alongside the likes of Jukka Perko, Eero Koivistoinen, and Jukkis Uotila. His success in his home country opened pathways to the international scene, seeing Viinikainen perform with, for instance, Joe Lovano, Tim Hagans and Randy Brecker. The guitarist has released three solo albums and made countless appearances as a sideman on the recordings of some of the foremost Finnish jazz artists. He has been awarded with the Finnish Jazz Federation’ Yrjö prize and the Sony Jazz Prize.
In this concert, Jussi Lampela Nonet with Teemu Viinikainen tackle bluesy jazz standards where blues plays a role either as a structural feature or as a dominant mood. The set list includes for instance the following standards, each picked from a different era: ”St. Louis Blues”, ”Israel”, ”Mr. Syms” and ”Turnaround”.
Jussi Lampela is an acclaimed and versatile composer and arranger. His nonet was first introduced to the general audience through the release of the album Lampela X Eskola, released on Ricky-Tick Records in 2010. Trumpeter Jukka Eskola appears as a soloist on the recording. In addition to Eskola, Lampela’s long-term partners in music include Vantaan Viihdeorkesteri, UMO Jazz Orchestra, Teppo Mäkynen and Pessi Levanto.
The last concert in the Kanneltalo concert series takes place 9 December with vocalists Yona and Emma Salokoski joining the orchestra.
