The soundtrack for the Finnish blockbuster film Tavarataivas was released in Japan in a digital format jointly with the film premiere on 6 August. Tavarataivas is directed by Petri Luukkainen and the score was composed by Finnish saxophonist Timo Lassy. The music was released at the insistence of the audience.
The score for Petri Luukkainen’s film Tavarataivas, penned by Finnish jazz artist Timo Lassy, was released in Japan on 6 August. The soundtrack is available in a digital format only. The release was initiated by the local audience, who viewed the film at EU Film Days film festival in Tokyo in June and requested its release. Entitled Tavarataivas / 365 Days of Simple Life, the film will be on in cinemas in Japan on 16 August.
“It was a pleasant surprise to hear that the audience wished the music for the film to be released. The project was carried out as swiftly as possible, which is why we opted for a digital format”, says Petri Luukkainen. “The format is also in keeping with the film’s theme, materialism. As I visited the previews in Tokyo, I witnessed how the audience reacted to the soundtrack with apparent enthusiasm and, moreover, seemed to be familiar with Lassy’s music from before. The final decision on the release was made with our distributor, but a significant factor was the Japanese audience’s wish, which we encountered numerous times.
Tavarataivas (Finland, 2013) is Petri Luukkainen’s debut film, which focuses on his own experiment on life without material goods. Luukkainen’s one-year experiment involved taking all his material belongings to a warehouse from where he could collect only one item back per day. Tavarataivas was widely noted upon its release and it the most popular film at DocPoint documentary film festival on the year.
Timo Lassy, responsible for the film score, is one of the hottest Finnish jazz artists today. Up to now, Lassy has released four albums with his own group, of which the latest, the double-vinyl recording Live With Lassy, came out at the turn of the year. In August one can enjoy Lassy live in Brazil, Greece, at Turku Jazz Festival and Viapori Jazz Festival. He has performed in Japan with the massively successful Five Corners Quintet and the Italian jazz musician Nicola Conte.
