Symphonic Jazz in Moldova was designed as a four-concert series, where a Finnish jazz quartet meets the Moldovan National Youth Orchestra. The orchestral arrangements are mainly by Sampo Kasurinen, the compositions and lyrics are written by Tuomas J. Turunen and Elena Mindru.
When the travel restrictions caused by the pandemic came into force, it was decided to conduct the concerts in an innovative way, with the quartet recording their own parts for a video in Finland and the video was projected with a live orchestra in Moldova on October 31st, 2020. On-site at Teatrul National Eugene Ionesco had an audience within the limits allowed by the corona restrictions.
The canceled concerts will be replaced in four parts from 12th to 15th November 2020 at 19:00 every night as YouTube broadcasts, which have also been recorded and cut with high professionalism so that the kilometers between the quartet and the orchestra are barely noticeable.
The Symphonic Jazz in Moldova project is a continuation of the 2018 Symphonic Jazz in Transylvania project, which was implemented in collaboration with the Romanian Youth Orchestra. Symphonic meets Jazz is a concept designed to support young composers and their new works written for a symphony orchestra, interdisciplinary dialogue and the mobility of participating musicians.
