Svart Records issues forgotten live tapes by Heikki Sarmanto

entry-image

The long-standing composer-pianist Heikki Sarmanto's career spans five decades and includes works in the fields of jazz, classical, avant-garde and opera. Despite the versatility of his repertory, Sarmanto's musical roots have always lain in the freer corner of jazz, and it is this side of him that the three-album compilation, The Helsinki Tapes, represents. Recorded in 1971 and 1972 at Helsinki's N-Club a.k.a. "Natsa", the tapes were lost for four decades until Sarmanto happened to come across them in his attic.
