This summer, jazz is in the air in Jyväskylä as the monthly Summer Jazz Club takes over Poppari, beginning from 27 May. Each month, two up-and-coming young groups that have strong ties to Jyväskylä city will take the stage and jam to their - and the audience's - heart's content. The club will be organised on 27 May, 17 June, 22 July and 12 August 2014.
The first club night will see two new, fascinating quartets, both playing their original compositions. Lakecity Groovers consists of already established young professionals who take a straight-ahead approach to jazz music. The focus is on traditional building blocks of jazz: sturdy swing, high intensity, free-flowing energy and the joy of playing. What else would one need? The Jyväskylä-based group will perform original material and jazz standards from the 50s and 60s, seasoned with rootsy blues and rock music influences.
Hermes, founded in 2013, is a quartet formed by a group of friends who wanted to bring their own sonic roots and a love for Brazilian musical tradition together. The outcome could be described as highly individual jazz, which is driven by Brazilian rhythmic patterns and does not take genre boundaries too seriously.
