The four-day festival opens with world-class trio trio Richard Bona & Alfredo Rodriguez featuring The Pocket Queen.
The first Savoy JAZZFest took place in March 2019 and was an immediate hit among the audience and the critics. The next Savoy JAZZFest presenting the cream of international and Finnish jazz music is organised from 5 to 8 of March 2020.
Savoy JAZZFest opens on Thursday with the top-notch trio Richard Bona & Alfredo Rodriguez Featuring The Pocket Queen, who offers an elegant mix of Cuban and Cameroonian rhythms with R&B tones. Richard Bona is known as a charismatic performer and has said to be one of the world’s best bassist. Bona met Alfredo Rodriguez after producer Quincy Jones introduced them to each other at the Montreaux Jazz festival in Switzerland. The men soon found a musical connection and the collaboration began with beautiful piece “Raices”, which is included in Rodriguez’ album Tocororo (2016). At Savoy JAZZFest Richard Bona and Alfredo Rodriguez take over the stage together with Los Angeles-based drummer Taylor Gordon.
The next Savoy JAZZFest widely presents different genres of jazz. On Friday, the first act announced is legendary American trumpeter Tom Harrel, who represents the traditional jazz music. Tom Harrel is one of the most creative and dynamic jazz instrumentalists of our time and has worked together with Dizzy Gillespien, Horace Silverin, Joe Lovanon and Gerry Mulliganin among others. Harrel is a master at jazz expression and constantly looking for new challenges and influences. Tom Harrel’s newest album Infinity was released in the spring 2019.
