Pori Jazz celebrates its 50-year anniversary in 2015 and Satakunta Museum is strongly involved already in the preparations. The museum will run a special exhibition and arrange several Pori Jazz –themed events for the public, but it will also collect various sorts of material – from oral to visual – to record the festival’s history. One of the goals of the project is to explore how the recorded material could be utilised to allure tourists and economic life to the whole Satakunta region.

Pori Jazz and Satakunta Museum collaborate in two projects that will trace the heritage of the 50-year-old jazz festival. Both projects are funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Satakunta Foundation and Satakuntaliitto. The first project will map how the festival has been perceived in oral history by condicting interviews with individuals involved in the festival over the years. This will be carried out in partnership with the University of Turku’s cultural production and landscape studies. The public’s memories are also welcome: accounts and pictures can be shared via online service "Kerro museolle" on www.kerromuseolle.fi. The museum will publish photos and stories on the website, and anyone is free to upload their own photos and comment other photos on the site.

In addition to oral accounts, the history of Pori Jazz festival will be explored through other types of material. In the second project Satakunta Museum will look at what photos, archives, material objects and audio and video tapes reveal of the history of the festival. Some of the material will be on display in an exhibition that opens in July 2015, just at the time of the jubilee edition of Pori Jazz festival. How the collected material can be used to promote local economic life and tourism will also be gauged. One of the long-term aims is to further Pori’s image as a city where jazz is present all year round.
