Sampo Kasurinen wins Esko Linnavalli big band composition contest

The final concert of Esko Linnavalli composition contest was aired live on YLE1 radio channel on Tuesday, May 19. Young composer Kasurinen's afro jazz piece "Samson" received the first prize and 1.500 euros.

UMO Jazz Orchestra was conducted by Antti Rissanen, and the big band played 10 new pieces. The ten compositions were selected out of 22 anonymous compositions by a jury.

In the final concert, the composers were revealed and the jury - consisting of composers Heikki Sarmanto, Pessi Levanto and chairman Jukka Linkola - ranked the winners in the following order:

1st prize, 1.500 euros: Sampo Kasurinen: Samson
2nd prize 1.500 euros: Teemu Halmkrona: An Evening at River
3rd prize 500 euros: Sid Hille: Hashtag
