SaloJazz Festival 2023 is a showcase for domestic jazz 29.9.–1.10.2023

The theme of the SaloJazz Festival at the end of September this year is the familiar and new music makers of Finnish jazz.

The festival, which takes place during the Salo market weekend, will once again spread over several concert venues, just like in the earlier years of the event. In addition to Ravintola Musine, which functions as a festival center, concerts are organized in the Kuparisali of the new parish hall and in the Salo library. Saturday culminates with the Emma-awarded hip-hop star Jesse Markin's concert.

New this year is the Jazz interests -brunch on Sunday, hosted by Teppo Mäkynen and Matti Nives, where in addition to tasty food, you can enjoy the recordings selected by the host and hear the stories behind the recordings. Jazz interests is a weekly jazz program produced by Radio Helsinki.

The opening concert of the festival brings guitarist Kalle Kalima and bassist Antti Lötjönen together for the first time. Kalle Kalima, who settled in Berlin, is an award-winning guitarist and composer whose bands have gained fame around the world. As a composer, his works have been performed by, for example, Opera Lyon and NDR Big Band. In Salo, double bassist Antti Lötjönen has visited e.g. with his own band Quintet East and as a member of the Jeff “Tain” Watts Trio.

Maja Mannila, who will perform at Friday's late show, is an impressive young jazz/soul singer, pianist and composer. With her trio, she performs her own songs, which are a mix of r'n'b, soul, jazz and gospel music. The band represented Finnish new jazz at the spring 2023 Nordic Jazz Comets event.

SaloJazz continues its cooperation with music schools. On Saturday, the new TRI saxophone trio consisting of students of the Sibelius Academy will perform in the Salo library, and Royal Remedy from the Turku Conservatory will perform in Musine. Admission to these concerts is free.

On the Saturday of the festival, the Case Kämäräinen lineup will perform in Musine, where Polish saxophonist Marek Konarski and vibraphonist legend Severi Pyysalo will be heard in the band led by drummer Tomi Kämäräinen. The “jazz condition” of the new grand piano in Kuparisali will be checked by pianist Iro Haarla, who has had a long career, with her jazz quintet. The program consists of ballads composed by Haarla.

Saturday's closing concert will once again stretch the festival's genre offering, when the indie comet, hip-hop star Jesse Markin, will take the stage. In addition to domestically, Markin is also listed on international music markets.

In Sunday's closing concert, Panu Savolainen explores the acoustics of the new Kuparisali alone with his vibraphone. In addition to Savolainen's own, melody-rich jazz compositions, the concert program consists of music from J.S.Bach to Finnish schlager.

You can familiarize yourself with the festival's offerings at the Get to know jazz evening organized two weeks before the event, where you can listen to the artists' music and learn about their careers.
