From 17 to 19 October, Turku Conservatory and Turku Jazz Orchestra co-organise a training weekend for music students, students of the Turku Jazz Orchestra Big Band school and everyone with a general interest in jazz music.
Rytmimusiikin erikoispäivät is a three-day event that offers a range of activities to music students and jazz enthusiasts. The programme consists of workshops taught by Belgian trumpeter Bert Joris and vibraphonist Severi Pyysalo, open rehearsals of Turku Jazz Orchestra, live performance of the Big Band school and, of course, jam sessions. The weekend climaxes on Sunday 19 October at concert hall Sigyn where Turku Jazz Orchestra play a concert featuring Bert Joris.
It is the first occasion that internationally acclaimed trumpeter and composer Bert Joris visits Finland. He is known for his membership in Joe Lovano’s quintet and Mel Lewis’s big band in the 80s, and he has also collaborated with Vanguard Jazz Orchestra as a guest soloist and composer. Severi Pyysalo is one of the most recognised Finnish vibraphonists and a major presence in several groups, of which Perko-Pyysalo Poppoo is perhaps most famous.
"We have high expectations of the event. Turku Jazz Orchestra is rising fast to become one of the major big bands in Finland. Collaborating with international artists helps us to know where Turku Jazz Orchestra stands know and which goals to set ourselves next. The educational offerings of the event is versatile, there is something for each both players of smaller bands and bigger orchestras,” says Juha Järvinen, the rector of the Turku Conservatory.
Rytmimusiikin erikoispäivät takes place in the facilities of the Turku Conservatory. Jam sessions are organised at Ravintola S/S Borea. The workshops are for students of Turku Conservatory and Big Band school, other events are open for public. The event is sponsored by Suomen Jazzakatemia ry.
