Popular Ricky-Tick Big Band & Julkinen Sana make their long-awaited comeback this October. The grand ensemble of jazz and hip hop celebrates their third album with nine-concert tour covering six cities.
Cooperation began in 2012 when composer-conductor Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen asked rappers Paleface, Redrama and Tommy Lindgren to be the soloists of Ricky-Tick Big Band. The ensemble has released two albums Burnaa (2013) and Korottaa Panoksii (2015) both with very good reviews and the band has reached audience from sold-out concert halls to music festivals.
“Since the first album, the music of this ensemble has been the search of new directions. On this upcoming album we challenge ourselves and the audience with more modern style than before. There are more electronic sounds, electric drum tracks and sub-bass frequencies”, Valtteri Laurell Pöyhönen states.
According to Pöyhönen the music was influenced by rhythmics of trap music and footwork, which is a street dance genre that originated in Chicago during the 1990s.
"There are strong contrast in arrangements, from the minimalistic trap beat to massive brass surges”, Pöyhönen describes the new music. “In addition to electronic sounds we added clarinet and bass clarinet to Ricky-Tick Big Band’s instrumentation to create thick wind instrument textures in style of Steve Reich.”
Pioneers of Finnish hip hop Paleface, Redrama and Tommy Lindgren are also excited to be back. “We have a burning desire to show the world how totally unique this ensemble is. Valtteri’s music takes the whole 20-piece group to new, deeper ground”, trio comments.
The new album will be released by drummer Jaska Lukkarinen’s own record label. The band wants to take even more comprehensive responsibility of the album and its production.
