A group formed by 18 Finnish top musicians grew tired of having their concerts cancelled during the corona pandemic and recorded a joint quarantine video remotely. Released on Friday 24th April, the video features several saxophonists, trumpeters, trombonists and other musicians as well as dancers.
The musicians have named themselves Quarantine Big Band, and have recorded their interpretation of Joe Zawinul's legendary Birdland in their first video.
Quarantine Big Band's video includes saxophonists Aleksi Ahoniemi, Roope Löflund, Pope Puolitaival, William Suvanne and Ville Vannemaa; trombonists Aarni Häkkinen, Antti Rissanen, Kasperi Sarikoski and Heikki Tuhkanen; and trumpeters Tero Lindberg, Kalevi Louhivuori, Mikko Pettinen and Janne Toivonen. The keyboard is played by Antti Kujanpää, guitar by Varre Vartiainen, bass by Antti Ahoniemi, drums by Anssi Sopanen and percussion by Abdissa "Mamba" Assefa. In addition the video includes vocalist Antti Koivula and dancers Katri Mäkinen, Jasmin Geselle and Minttu Köykkä.
Birdland was premiered on Friday 14th April in the new programme Koronastudio at AlfaTV. The production was organized by Pekka Tuppurainen, Jyri Sariola and Video Antti Kujanpää.
– When this is all over, Quarantine Big Band will eventually perform its first gig in the capital region, says William Suvanne, the instigator of the band's inception. Tickets for the upcoming performance are now available at Mesenaatti.
