Porvoo Jazz Festival kicks off

On Friday 13th and Saturday 14th September, the first ever Porvoo Jazz Festival, will be presenting a series of concerts in the heart of Porvoo.

The festival will be bringing some of the hottest names in jazz to Porvoo. As part of this programme of activities, the Friday 13th evening will be a compelling experience, with some of Finland’s finest musicians.

Verneri Pohjola will open the festival with his quartet, accompanied by Aki Rissanen on piano, Antti Lötjönen on double bass and Joonas Riippa on drums. A rising Finnish jazz star, Pohjola brings his internationally lauded quartet to the opening concert of the festival at Grand. The group will be
presenting energetically rhythmic and nuanceful original music. Pohjola will be bringing this seasoned quartet, together for over a decade, to the heart of Porvoo.

The second quartet of the evening programme will be the festival’s own Artistic Director, André Sumelius on drums, Cesar Joaniquet (SPA), tenor saxophone, Sami Linna on guitar and Mikko Helevä on Hammond organ. Sumelius, who cut his teeth in the jazz world of the USA, studying with Miles Davis’s former drummer; the late, great Tony Williams. A Finnish Grammy winner in his own right, Sumelius will be taking us on a soulful and cathartic journey, featuring his group’s versions of
seldom-heard songs from jazz’s golden age, adding their own spice as they go along.

The Jazz Festival continues on Saturday 14 at 19.00 with KVR (Kannaste, Viinikainen, Riippa). Jussi Kannaste, tenor saxophone, accompanied by the critically heralded Teemu Viinikainen on guitar and Joonas Riippa on drums are an amalgam of a very personal and bold instrumental expression combined with a very tangible sense of humor. Their combination is a fabulous mixture of the jazz tradition, imagination and living in the moment, creating a group sound, which leaves no soul untouched.

Closing out the Porvoo Jazz Festival will be an amazing duo from Spain, Perico Sambeat & Albert Sanz. Bringing us a combined taste of flamenco immersed in the jazz tradition, fuelled by their own extensive musical experiences, this duo is sure to amaze us with the stories they tell on their instruments. Having played with internationally renowned artists, such as Brad Mehldau, Pat Metheny, and Kurt Rosenwinkel, their own experiences will guide us through their musical journey. The duo will be joined by special guests towards the end of their set, bringing us closer to the jazz jam session a few blocks away, after the concerts, giving us an unforgettable night of dynamic, soulful and beautifully swinging jazz music.

The Jazz Jam for the festival will be held at Zum Beispiel, each night after the last performance, in the old town. Friday 13th will be hosted by Mikko “Gunu” Karjalainen on trumpet, Teemu Viinikainen on guitar, Eero Tikkanen, double bass and Tommi Vainikainen on drums. The Saturday 14th Jazz Jam is hosted by Sami Linna on guitar, special guest Cesar Joaniquet on tenor sax, Mikko Helevä on Hammond Organ and André Sumelius on drums.

We have pleasure in welcoming our new partner Restaurant Timbaali to the Porvoo jazz Festival. Being well known for its escargots, they can now be found on a special Jazz Menu, created for the Jazz Festival by the award winning chef, Markus Aremo. To get the Saturday evenings performance started in style, Cesar Joaniquet from Barcelona, along with his trio, will perform two sets on Saturday, September 14th, from 4-6pm at Timbaali, in the heart of old Porvoo. This is in addition to the programme of events scheduled at Grand
