Pauli Lyytinen and Jacky Molard & François Corneloup Quartet on Joint Production Tour by Finnish Jazz Federation and Vapaat Äänet

The 36th joint production tour by the Finnish Jazz Federation and Vapaat Äänet agency in September-October 2024 will bring together saxophonist Pauli Lyytinen’s solo project and the Jacky Molard & François Corneloup Quartet. This Finnish-French journey through the worlds of jazz and world music will reach Seinäjoki, Raahe, Kajaani, Oulu, and Espoo. In addition, Pauli Lyytinen will perform solo in eight other locations in Finland, while the Jacky Molard & François Corneloup Quartet will independently perform in Kalajoki.

In his solo project, saxophonist Pauli Lyytinen pushes his instrument to its limits. In his hands, the saxophone becomes a bass, a harmonic instrument, and a solo instrument – often also a rhythmic element. Lyytinen conjures entire musical worlds, sometimes enhanced with effects, sometimes purely acoustic. The creation of his new album has been a lengthy process, during which he has, for instance, recorded the songs of swans and nightingales and played alongside the birds. Lyytinen is a versatile musician and composer, operating particularly in the realms of jazz, experimental, electroacoustic, and contemporary music. His active ensembles include Pauli Lyytinen SoloPauli Lyytinen & Niillas HolmbergPauli Lyytinen Rabbit HoleMagnetia OrkesteriElifantree, and Sole Azul.

“Entre les terres” – “between the lands,” declare violinist Jacky Molard and saxophonist François Corneloup in their new ensemble. Molard is a leading figure in the Breton folk music scene, long advocating for the renewal of tradition. Corneloup is a maverick in the French jazz scene, a respected artisan of improvised music. Both compose colorful pieces for the quartet, which, in addition to them, includes clarinetist Catherine Delaunay and the cello virtuoso Vincent Courtois, known from his many visits to Finland. Delaunay is recognized not only for her improvisational skills but also as a respected interpreter of contemporary music, while Courtois is an active influencer in the creative European music scene through numerous projects. The album Entre les terres was released this spring on the Emouvance label and received enthusiastic feedback from critics.
