Oulu All Star Big Band and the accordion artist Niko Kumpuvaara join forces for the first time in a rare concert that combines big band sound, virtuosic accordion solos and tango.

The concert takes place at Cultural Centre Valve in Oulu on Wednesday, 7 February, and it includes music by the father of tango nuevo, Astor Piazzolla, in addition to some more traditional tango classics. The concert is conducted by Ville Vannemaa.

Award-winning accordion artist Niko Kumpuvaara is a versatile musician. He has premiered works by Finnish classical composers, ranging from solo pieces to concertos. In addition to classical contemporary music, he enjoys playing rhythm music. Among his most active projects in recent years have been the Finnish schlager music legend Dallapé, Maria Ylipää & Friends, electronic instrumental music Alphabeaver, and merging comic art with live music in Comics in Concert.

Ville Vannemaa is one of Finland’s most sought-after jazz musicians. He has worked as a conductor for the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, Espoo Big Band and Turku Jazz Orchestra, as well as Oulu All Star Big Band. Vannemaa plays the saxophone and other woodwind instruments in several of our country’s leading ensembles, from UMO to Popeda and from various city theaters to jazz ensembles.
