Next in the OMJ Jazz & Etno concert series, trendy grooves and power ballads will be heard in the concert of the Estonian jazz duo Kadri Voorand and Mihkel Mälgand on April 26, 2023 at 19:00 at RioLive.
Kadri Voorand is a vocalist, pianist and composer who creates music through strong emotional storytelling, combining catchy rhythms with a completely unique way of blending improvisational pop, jazz and folk elements. Voorand is a well-established vocalist whose original music and expression have brought her a number of prizes and performances in Estonia as well as abroad, and she has has toured in many countries during her career.
Award-winning Mihkel Mälgand is one of the most active bass players in Estonia. He has also collaborated with jazz stars like Kurt Elling, Nils Landgren and Dave Liebman. Mälgand also appears as an arranger and occasional co-writer on the Voorand’s latest album In Duo with Mihkel Mälgand.
Voorand’s and Mälgand’s strong sense of each other’s musical rhythm and improvisational moments result in a tight duo. The pop-like melodies are combined with virtuosic improvisations and skilled technique. They perform heartbreaking power ballads next to hip grooves, accompanied by a totally unique twist in the sound and unexpected, daring lyrics.
The concert celebrates UNESCO's International Jazz Day, which is celebrated annually on April 30. In 2011, UNESCO appointed the date International Jazz Day, and from then on jazz as an art form has been officially recognized as a promoter of peace, intercultural dialogue, diversity, and respect for human rights and dignity.
OMF Jazz & Etno -series is a year around concert series organized by Oulu Music Festival Foundation that hosts wide range of domestic artists as well as visiting stars.
