Tampere-based record label, Eclipse Music, tries its wings in the sphere of live music by launching a new jazz club in Tampere in autumn 2016. The Eclipse Music Club will offer topical jazz and progressive rock at Tampereen Ylioppilasteatteri, in the heart of the City of Tampere.
Eclipse Jazz Club makes an entrée onto Finland’s jazz scene by presenting three concerts in the autumn season at Tampereen Ylioppilasteatteri, known as a home for numerous stand-up clubs and high-quality amateur theatre. Kimmo Oksanen of the Tampere-based production company, Tuotantomajakka Oy, will be in charge of sound engineering and lighting, while the manager of Eclipse Music, Tapio Ylinen, will be the artistic director of the club series.
The second concert will be organised in conjunction with the festival Lost in Music.
Over the autumn, Ylioppilasteatteri will be playing host to some of Finland’s best jazz musicians including trumpeter Verneri Pohjola, sax player Pauli Lyytinen, pianist Kari Ikonen, drummer Mika Kallio and drummer Olavi Louhivuori. Also, trio Elifantree, who have been making a convincing international breakthrough, will be seen as one of the stars of the club series.
“Jazz has made a second big coming in recent years all over the world, with many defining artists – such as David Bowie on his last album – drawing from it significantly again. When it comes to innovativeness and know-how, Finnish jazz bears comparison with international jazz music any time”, says Tapio Ylinen.
“Apart from the fine late-autumn festival, Tampere Jazz Happening, Tampere has been slightly eclipsed by the jazz offerings of Helsinki and Turku. Similarly, many of the recent tours produced by the Finnish Jazz Federation have not stopped at Tampere at all. These have partly been due to the lack of suitable venues. Ylioppilasteatteri, however, answers the demand spectacularly, and with the expertise of Tuotantomajakka we will be able to utilise this acoustically fine space to the fullest. Eclipse Jazz Club aims at establishing jazz concert activity in Tampere which is surely abundant in friends of the genre.”
Eclipse Jazz Club kicks off on 15 September and the other concerts will be held on 6 October (in conjunction with festival Lost in Music) and 15 December. Further information will be released soon. The schedule for the spring season will be released in the autumn.
