Mopo presents fresh material from its new album Beibe and New York -based Finnish guitarist Olli Hirvonen performs with his new international quartet. The night ends with the fantastic We Jazz DJ's and National RGB VJ's.
One of the brightest stars on the Finnish jazz sky nowadays, punk-jazz band Mopo and New York -based Olli Hirvonen with his quartet perform at We Jazz Club on Saturaday 12th of April. Mopo released recently its recognized second album Beibe, and Olli Hirvonen, who belongs to the young jazz promises of Finnish jazz, gives a rare performance in Finland with his American-Danish-Dutch quartet. Both of the groups will perform on the floor level among the audience in the spirit of loft jazz tradition. As always on We Jazz Clubs, We Jazz DJ's and National RGB VJ's will finish the night after live bands and make people dance til morning. The tickets to the club are available at Tiketti.
Mopo describes "Beibe" as a story about growing up. Their new music also showcases the darker shades of life. The central themes on the album include friendship, love, chaos, escaping the reality and understanding yourself and other people. The album has also been inspired by several topical news in Finland and worldwide. The album has been recorded on a tape recorder which gives it an organic feel to support the rough-around-the-edges sound of the band. "Beibe" has successfully captured the energy and the unique punk attitude of Mopo's energetic live performances. The individual strengths of each three musicians come together in Mopo's music beautifully. Olli Hirvonen Quartet consists of four talented musician, Olli Hirvonen (guitar), Frederick Menzies (saxophone), Jeff Koch (bass) and Philippe Lemm (drums). Originally from Finland but nowadays living in New York, Olli Hirvonen (b. 1989) is the only Finnish musician in his quartet, Menzies being Danish, Koch American and Lemm Dutch. Club We Jazz, initiated in December 2009, has operated bi-monthly at Helsinki's Kuudes Linja. The ethos of the event is to build a continuum of jazz along each single night, combining live acts, DJs and visuals. The club features bands curated by We Jazz, the club's in-house DJ collective with casual guests, and the Emma prize winning VJ collective National RGB. The live acts often opt for the chance to play on the floor of the venue in true "loft jazz" style, creating a unique opportunity for interaction with their audience. Live bands featured at the club night thus far include some of Finland's top ensembles, such as Timo Lassy Band, Verneri Pohjola Quartet, Jaska Lukkarinen Trio, Black Motor, HERD, Jukka Perko Streamline Jazztet and Tonight at Noon.
The doors at We Jazz Club at 12.4. open exceptionally at 22:30 because of the other gig organized at Kuudes Linja earlier the same night.
