Down Beat magazine, one of the biggest jazz medias, chose Finnish saxophonist Mikko Innanen as one of the Rising Stars of the baritone saxophone.
Saxophone player Mikko Innanen (36) was recognised in Down Beat magazine’s 62nd Annual Critics Poll. Innanen was selected among the “Rising Stars” in the category of baritone saxophonists. Down Beat, one of the leading jazz magazines of the world, names each year the best of up-and-coming talents and established artists of the jazz world. This year’s results were published in the August issue.
Lapinjärvi native Innanen has made a long career in the fields of jazz and improvised music, both in Finland and abroad. Innanen’s own groups include Mikko Innanen & Innkvisitio, Mikko Innanen 10+, PLOP and Gourmet. Innanen resides currently in Helsinki.
The saxophonist’s new album, Mikko Innanen with William Parker & Andrew Cyrille: Song For A New Decade, will come out in September on the Helsinki-based TUM Records. TUM is famous for its output in free and improvised jazz-based music.
