Less visible but as important is the work that the group does at kindergartens, hospitals and nursery homes. Mikka Kallio Band’s success is based on high-level musicianship, precision and a repertoire which is constantly developed. As before, the group gigs all over Finland this year, even from Lahti as far as Utsjoki. Miikka Kallio’s composition for clarinet and string orchestra was premiered in Pietari, and the group also hosts Jazztori club nights.
Miikka Kallio Band’s show at Jazztori focuses on some of the most classic tunes of the Finnish popular song. A selection of some of the most beautiful melodies and most touching texts, popularised by Tapio Rautavaara and Rauli Badding Somerjoki, among others, will be interpreted by soloistsMarko Haavisto and Kimmo Härmä. Toivo Kärki’s works will be remembered, also. “We will play the best of Finnish popular song with an emphasis on the older and more melodic material, whereas Jean S. will deal with the popular party hits”, says Miikka Kallio.
