The renowned New York City Jazz Record magazine and its managing editor Laurence Donohue-Greene have selected Liberty Ship's second album, "Wide Open Suite & Noises At Sea", among the best albums of 2015 with an Honourable Mention.
The honorable mention will appear in the annual "Best of the Year" issue of the NYC Jazz Record, to be released on 26 December. This is the second time that the Finnish free jazz quartet has been selected among the finest releases of the year. Their debut double album, Approaching, also released by the independent label Eclipse Music, was chosen as one of the best new releases of 2013.
With saxophone virtuoso Esa Pietilä at the helm, Liberty Ship consists of some of the finest musicians of their generation in their native Finland. Bassist Antti Lötjönen was Artist of the Year at Pori Jazz Festival this summer, drummer Olavi Louhivuori has received the Finnish Jazz Grammy (The Jazz-EMMA) and was also Artist of the Year at Pori in 2014. Pianist Aki Rissanen won second prize in the solo piano contest in Montreux in 2004 and has since recorded, amongst others, with Dave Liebman.
