Kalkkiranta Jazz, organised in Sipoo by the sea on 16 August, brings some of the brightest stars of Finnish jazz on the stage. This year’s performers are Tuomo, Timo Kärmäräinen & Teemu Viinikainen duo and trio HERD & Aili Ikonen with a special guest, Vieno Kekkonen. The driving force behind the programme has been the festival’s new artistic director, vibraphonist Panu Savolainen.
HERD & Aili Ikonen, whose repertoire consists of the jazzy standards of the Finnish popular song, will spend a lot of time on the road this summer, making the audience twist around Finland. The quartet released their warmly welcomed debut last autumn, and they are now joined by the perpetually young and perpetually dazzling star of the golden 50s and 60s, Vieno Kekkonen. Guitarists Timo Kämäräinen and Teemu Viinikainen are both renowned for their versatility and supreme skills, and it is a guarantee that when these gentlemen form a duo we are in for something unique. The jazzy afternoon at Kalkkiranta will be closed by Tuomo, no doubt the hottest soul artist of the country. His fourth studio album, New Mystique, was hailed on its issue earlier this year with enthusiasm by critics and music fans alike.
The 21st Kalkkiranta Jazz is organised by Musiikkia Sipoossa ry in the seaside milieu of Kalkkiranta, Sipoo, on Saturday 16 August. The programme starts at 3PM. Until 2013, pianist Iiro Rantala held the artistic director’s seat since the festival's inauguration. Some of the previous years’ artists at Kalkkiranta include Trio Töykeät, Jukka Perko, Anna-Mari Kähärä, Felix Zenger, Lasse Mårtensson and Emma Salokoski.
