The stellar nine-piece performs future classics in a rare collab concert with the two dazzling singers.
Helsinki’s Savoy Theatre is to play host for an unforgettable jazz evening on 14 September when Jussi Lampela Nonet, led by the eponymous composer, returns to the stage after almost a year-long silence. The acclaimed group will be joined by two first-class younger-generation singers: Maria Ylipää, who, like the nonet, is just re-entering Finnish arenas, and Aili Ikonen who has recently released an acclaimed new album. The theme of the concert is future classics; new songs that have been arranged in the spirit of jazz standards. The lyrics are by Heimo Hatakka, who has previously penned lines for such Finnish artists as Anna Puu, vocal group Viisi and Jonna Järnefelt.
Maria Ylipää is at home in the theatre footlight, on silver screen and fronting an orchestra. The title role of the play Kristina från Duvemåla has taken Ylipää around Scandinavia – from Helsinki to Sweden’s Goteborg and Stockholm – and in recent years she has been kept busy by various film shootings, including the musical Ollaan Vapaita (2015) and the thriller Tappajan näköinen mies, which hit the cinemas in February 2016. Aili Ikonen has recently toured with her own ensemble with a new album, Laulan, under her belt. She has also dazzled fronting the jazz trio HERD and tributing Ella Fitzgerald in the musical project Tribute to Ella. Ikonen is also known from long-standing jazz quartet Kvalda and she has appeared as a soloist for such important big bands as UMO Jazz Orchestra and Norrbotten Big Band.
Jussi Lampela is an acclaimed and versatile composer and arranger. Jussi Lampela Nonet debuted in 2010 on the album Lampela X Eskola, which was released on the renowned jazz label Ricky-Tick Records and featured the hot trumpeter Jukka Eskola as a soloist. In addition to him, the group is composed of e.g. the Dalindèo saxophonist Petri Puolitaival, pianist Riitta Paakki and drummer Jussi Lehtonen.
