Jazz enthusiasts of Jyväskylä area will be treated to some great original tunes by two different trios this Tuesday, 23 June, when the June edition of the Summer Club Series invades Ravintola Poppari. The venue has been as good as a home to the members of Tuomas Paukku Trio, the first performer, for over ten years, while the young jazzers of Helsinki-based Valkia are now seen on the Poppari stage for the first time.
Tuomas Paukku Trio, formed by three Jyväskylä natives, play their eponymous leader’s compositions. Also a guitarist, Paukku composes actively and is eager to explore new atmospheres and dimensions for jazz music. While utilising a multi-coloured sonic palette, including stronger feels and tints, he is also fascinated with a certain amount of accessibility. The trio’s music displays a tangible Scandinavian influence.
A graduate of Stockholm’s Kungliga Musikhögskolan, Paukku’s most active group in recent years has been the Finno-Swedish Tuomas Paukku Description whose debut album is due out toward the end of 2015. Bassist Petri Jaakonaho has studied at the Sibelius Academy and played with a number of Finnish top jazzers. Having recently returned to his hometown, Jyväskylä, Jaakonaho became a member in the rising pop/jazz outfit Soul Valpio Band. Drummer Tomi Saikkonen is a sought-after player and a familiar face from such groups as Kadi Quartet, Lauluyhtye Suora Lähetys, Soul Valpio Band, Aapo Heinonen Quintet, Antti Utriainen Trio and Antti Utriainen Expansion. He has performed in, among others, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Estonia and Latvia and at several renowned Finnish pop/rock/jazz festivals, including Provinssirock, Pori Jazz, Kalott Jazz, Rauma Jazz, Jazz-Espa and Pipefest.
Valkia is a trio composed of pianist Juho Valjakka, bassist Maria Lamminen and drummer Riku Sonkkanen – all students of the Pop & Jazz Conservatory. The up-and-coming band has toured both within and without the Finnish boarders. In addition to the Scandinavian and American jazz traditions, Valkia’s music nods to the classical world; in addition to his career as a jazz pianist, Valjakka is a skilled classical flautist. These representatives of the rising jazz generation of Finland make a great addition to the club series – especially when the venue of Poppari has for some time fostered some of the brightest jazz talents of Finland.
