Jazzpatio, organized in collaboration between the Oulu Music Festival and Jumpru Pub, is celebrating its 10th anniversary — and the occasion will feature 10 concerts. This summer is full of reasons to celebrate!
Launched in 2016, the free summer concert series once again offers a broad selection of northern Finnish and Finnish jazz, both vocal and instrumental. The program also includes two tribute concerts dedicated to jazz legends. As in previous years, the artists were selected through an open application process.
THE SUMMER BEGINS
The series opens with South-East Corner, led by drummer Arttu Huopainen, a new-generation Finnish jazz ensemble whose music combines jazz tradition, melodic expression, and free improvisation.
Oulu-based Alisa Raike & The DisAssociates blends jazz, neo-soul, and original compositions with a surprising and modern approach.
Meanwhile, Veera Aliska Quintet performs both singer Veera Aliska’s original songs and jazz classics, combining a modern sound with the spirit of traditional jazz vocals.
IN JULY
Audiences can enjoy performances by four ensembles.
Anno 22 is a young jazz group from Jyväskylä whose music combines Nordic contemporary jazz, acoustic soundscapes, and electronic elements.
Originally from Oulu, Sivutuuli performs melodic contemporary jazz composed by its members, where sensitive interaction meets groove-driven rhythms.
Sir Garrison draws inspiration from nature and deep mutual listening, creating an intimate and warm sound closely connected to its surroundings.
At the end of the month, the program pays tribute to Michael Brecker, one of the great masters of the modern tenor saxophone. This tribute concert by an international top-level ensemble focuses on Brecker’s solo albums, representing modern jazz at its finest.
AUGUST EVENINGS AT JAZZPATIO
The August concerts begin with Kanvas, whose music combines jazz, pop, poetic lyrics, and delicate improvisation into an emotional and rhythmic soundscape.
The Oulu-based Nordic View weaves together jazz, rock, classical music, and world music into a melodic whole inspired by northern nature and strong improvisation.
Jazzpatio’s anniversary season culminates with About Coltrane Quartet 100, honoring the 100th anniversary of legendary John Coltrane with energetic and personal interpretations of some of his lesser-heard compositions.
Oulu Music Festival CEO Elena Mîndru-Turunen describes the upcoming anniversary season:
“The OMJ x Jumpru Jazzpatio series celebrates its tenth anniversary this summer — and it feels like we’ve only just gotten started. Ten summers, dozens of ensembles, and hundreds of moments where jazz has lived, breathed, and surprised audiences on Jumpru’s terrace during Oulu summer evenings.
Above all, this series is a place for encounters: for musicians, an opportunity to grow and experiment; for audiences, a chance to discover something new — and sometimes surprise themselves. These free concerts have brought jazz closer to people in a way that has been genuinely meaningful for Oulu’s cultural life.
The 2026 anniversary season, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Finnish jazz, feels like an especially powerful moment to look both backward and forward. The program reflects the diversity of Finnish jazz, featuring artists from Oulu and beyond, as well as international guests — and above all, the spirit of collaboration that has carried this series from the very beginning.
Jazz lives in the moment, and that is exactly why this series is so important: every evening is unique, and Jumpru’s terrace transforms into a new world each week.”
The free-entry jazz concert series OMJ x Jumpru Jazzpatio takes place on the terrace of Jumpru Pub on Tuesdays from June 16 to August 11, as well as on Thursday, August 13. Concerts begin at 9 PM, and the age limit is 20.
