The autobiography of Charles Mingus is published first time in Finnish in October. Koiraakin kurjempi (Beneath the Underdog ) is published by Aviador Kustannus and the it is translated by Jussi Niemi. Live interpretations of the Mingus’ music are heard at the book release clubs in Helsinki, Tampere, Kotka and Pori.
Bassist, pianist, composer and band leader Charles Mingus is an important power figure of jazz history and his biography Beneath the Underdog is one of the classics of jazz literature. The publishing of the Finnish translation is celebrated at Dubrovnik Lounge & Lobby in Helsinki on Monday 29 October. Saxophonist Mikko Innanen and bassist Eero Tikkanen perform their interpretations of Mingus’ music at the event, and translator Jussi Niemi and the professor of the Literature of the United States Bo Petterson (University of Helsinki) discuss the book and its topics.
