The star pianist will play at Sigyn Hall on 12 February.
The five-time Grammy-nominee Brad Mehldau’s visit will, no doubt, be the highlight of the season in Flame Jazz concert series. Selected as the Pianist of the Year for as many as seven times in the jazz Bible Down Beat, Mehldau belongs to the most influential jazz artists of his generation. Fifteen years has passed since his last visit, and now, in Turku, he will be playing his very first solo concert on Finnish soil.
Mehldau’s most recent album, a compilation of live music, recorded during the past ten years around Europe, came out in October 2015. In addition to his solo career, Mehldau is known as a leader of a number of groups and for his collaboration with the likes of Joshua Redman, Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter and John Scofield.
Mehldau’s solo performances have been lauded by critics around the globe. The virtuosic pianist’s unique solo programmes are a combination of loans from a range of artists, including Thelonius Monk, The Beatles, Johannes Brahms, Nirvana and Radiohead, original compositions and a hefty dose of free improvisation.
“Brad Mehldau is unarguably one for the most notable jazz pianists of his generation; therefore it is a dream come true to have him finally revisit Finland. Bringing such world-class stars as Mehldau here up north is becoming possible thanks to the increased co-operation between local Finnish jazz organisations,” explains Jussi Fredriksson, the Artistic Director for Flame Jazz.
