Diane Schuur's tour in Finland has a very special tone: Schuur will turn 70 years old when she is in Finland, on December 10. The performance at Helsinki's Kulttuuritalo is therefore also a celebratory concert for her.
Born in Tacoma, Washington in 1953, Schuur learned to play the piano by ear as a child and later studied at the Washington School for the Blind until the age of 11.
Schuur grew up surrounded by jazz influences in her childhood and youth. Her father was an amateur pianist, and her mother often listened to the music of Duke Ellington and Dinah Washington at home. In addition to Dinah Washington, Schuur's models for her own career have been Miles Davis, Carole King and Paul Simon.
Schuur has won two Grammy awards and has been nominated three times. She has collaborated with several legendary performers, including the Count Basie Orchestra, B.B. King, Ray Charles and Jose Feliciano.
