Finnish Jazz Federation, Sibelius Academy Jazz Music Department at Uniarts Helsinki, UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra and the Finnish Musicians’ Union Jazz Finland Residency program is happy to feature Dutch clarinettist, flutist and saxophonist Joris Roelofs as the next artist-in-residence from November 6th until November 20th. Roelofs will also give concerts at Porvoo Jazz Festival September 30th and with Hietsu is Happening October 1st.
Clarinettist, flutist and saxophonist Joris Roelofs (b. 1984) is known above all as a versatile musician. He’s also a composer and pedagogue who studies the relationship between Nietzsche's philosophy and music, and has composed works based on Nietzsche's philosophy. Roelofs is currently working on a PhD dissertation on Friedrich Nietzsche, improvisation and the notion of freedom. He teaches a master’s course on music and philosophy, “Freedom and Improvisation”. His lectures “Great Philosophers on Music” and “Nietzsche’s Muses” also explore the relationship between these topics. Roelofs writes philosophical essays and articles on Nietzsche-related topics. He is also a member of the International Nietzsche Research Group in Stuttgart, Germany.
Roelofs has been a member of the Concertgebouw Jazz Orchestra and the Vienna Art Orchestra and collaborated with Brad Mehldau, Lionel Loueke and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, among many others. Roelofs chairs the clarinet department (jazz) at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
The leading idea behind the residency program is to facilitate extensive networking with Finnish jazz professionals, in addition to supporting the participants’ own artistic work. Roelof's residency includes concerts at Porvoo Jazz Festival September 30th and with Hietsu is Happening October 1st. In November Roelofs will give a masterclass at the Sibelius Academy Jazz Department, as well as perform with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra. The residency concept also enables local professional jazz musicians to initiate collaborations with the Artist-in-Residence. The concert with UMO Helsinki takes place in Dance House Helsinki on the 10th of November.

The Jazz Finland Residency is a high profile residency program for invited jazz musicians, composers and conductors. Coordinated and administrated by Jazz Finland, the program annually invites two international guests for 1–2 month residencies in Finland. The residency includes giving masterclasses at Sibelius Academy Jazz Department, as well as performing with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra. The residency concept also enables local professional jazz musicians to initiate collaborations with the Artist-in-Residence. Further residency partners include Music Finland, Finnish Jazz Musicians’ Association and the Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP).
