Finnish Jazz Federation, together with Music Finland, Sibelius Academy and Europe Jazz Network organizes a Finnish showcase festival and an international export event in Helsinki on September 18 - 20, 2014. Jazz Finland festival includes a wide repertoire of live concerts open to public, a seminar and network events for international jazz professionals. Tickets for the concert programme will be on pre-sale at Tiketti and Lippupalvelu on May 5th.
Jazz Finland also hosts the European Jazz Conference for over a hundred participants who represent the core of European jazz professionals and provide a unique possibility to open doors for Finnish talent to go international. As a part of the festival programme, also young Nordic musicianship is being presented in a form of the Young Nordic Jazz Comets showcase. YNJC features upcoming jazz bands from all the Nordic countries. Jazz Finland festival is the biggest showcase event ever organized to promote Finnish jazz.
The live concerts feature top Finnish acts, like Dalindèo, Ilmiliekki Quartet, Nina Mya, Timo Lassy Band, Mopo, UMO Jazz Orchestra and Jussi Fredriksson Jazz Wars. The programme starts on Thursday the 18th when the YNJC showcase takes place at Koko Jazz Club, which is definitely one of the best clubs in Helsinki for live jazz.
On Friday the venue is the prestigious Music Center, where the festival takes over two halls, Camerata and the Black Box. The Music Center is also the home of the Sibelius Academy's jazz department, which hosts the Friday night's event. Friday's "afterparty" takes place at the National Theatre's Lavaklubi venue, hosted by We Jazz Agency.
The last night of the weekend presents yet another kind of stage, when the festival moves to Korjaamo Culture Factory on Saturday. The large and atmospheric building used to be a tram garage, and today Korjaamo Culture Factory is one of the largest arts centres in the Nordic countries.
The only Sunday concert by vibraphonist Panu Savolainen, takes us to the birthplace of the new wave of Finnish jazz, to Viiskulma (Five Corners). Viiskulma used to be the center of records shops, and it is only appropriate that Jazz Finland festival ends at Digelius Record Store, which has proudly stood tall at the Five Corners through the turmoil of digitization and the changes in the music culture.
