Flame Jazz and Turku Jazz Orchestra treat jazz lovers to international concerts throughout the autumn. The programme features magnificent Swedish vocalists, protection of the Baltic Sea, chess, young talents, commissioned composition for big band and much more.
The Flame Jazz concert series continues as a part of the Nordic Culture Fund’s Puls project and so the friends of jazz can enjoy Scandinavian top-notch jazz in Turku again this autumn. The season opens with Swedish vocalist Lina Nyberg who is celebrating the 10th anniversary of her rewarded ensemble. Two other Swedish-born vocalists are heard at the Café Tiljan this autumn as Miriam Aïda returns to Turku with her David Bowie repertoire arranged in the afro-Brazilian style and Anni Elif interprets the poetry of Edith Södergran.
International guests are also presented at Logomo’s jazz cave, Move 1 hall. Recognised American saxophonist Tony Malaby performs together with pianist Kari Ikonen, and in the end of November the energetic quintet Atomic takes over the stage. December brings the hot names of European modern jazz to Turku as we see Y-OTIS and ENEMY on the stage of Bar Ö.
The 13th Flame Jazz Cruise departures from Turku on 22 September with the Baltic Sea theme. Jaska Lukkarinen Trio and Severi Pyysalo are setting the mood already on Friday 21 at the Bar Ö. On Saturday the Flame Jazz comes to shore and together with the Saaristomeren Suojelurahasto promotes the protection of the Baltic Sea by the means of jazz at the Turku Main Library. The weekend culminates on the Viking Grace with the hottest jazz and rhythm music ensembles such as Timo Lassy & Ricky-Tick Big Band Brass ja Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble.
Big Band Turku Jazz Orchestra’s autumn offers both the favourites of the audience and the new and fresh works for big band. In September Jimi Tenori’s big band music dances the crowd at the Börs Night Club and in November the first commissioned work for TJO is presented at the Sigyn Hall. The piece is composed by pianist-composer Henri Lyysaari and the soloist of the concert is saxophonist Max Zenger, who was chosen for the Artist of the Year at the Turku Jazz Festival this spring. On the eve of the Independence Day Paula Koivuniemi entertains the audience on the Viking Grace and the Jazz City Turku year culminates with the traditional Antti Sarpila’s Christmas concert.
