Jazz Camp for Girls offers exciting and fun musical moments during the winter break from February 16–19, 2025. At the camp, participants will unleash their creativity by forming their own band, coming up with a name, creating original music, and playing together! Over four days, music is explored through improvisation and playing in new ways. The camp culminates in a final concert on Wednesday, February 19, at 12:00 PM.
The camp is intended for girls and those who identify as girls, primarily aimed at ages 9–13, though the age range is not strict. No prior musical experience is required. Bands will be formed with both beginners and more experienced players, with each group consisting of 6–8 participants.
The camp instructors are award-winning double bassist and composer Kaisa Mäensivu, and renowned woodwind specialist, composer, and UMO saxophonist Max Zenger. Instruction will be conducted in Finnish. Classes take place daily from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Ebelin (Ahertajantie 6, 02100 Espoo). Note: This is a day camp, and accommodation is not provided.
The camp is free of charge for participants. Registration is open until January 30, 2025, or until all spots are filled. Spaces are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Register for the camp through this link.
Jazz Camp for Girls is a concept launched by the Danish Jazz Federation (Jazz Denmark) in 2014, aiming to inspire young girls to engage with rhythm music. Jazz, in particular, has traditionally been male-dominated, with women often taking on the role of vocalist in bands.
The idea behind the concept is to provide an inspiring and safe environment for girls to try out different instruments, experience playing in a band, and compose music.
The Espoo camp is organized in collaboration with the April Jazz Festival, Espoo Music Institute’s Pop/Jazz program (Ebeli), UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, and the Finnish Jazz Federation.
