The girls' jazz camp organized last summer in Pori will take place this year in connection with Turku Sea Jazz in the last week of July. The camp will take place at the premises of the Turku Conservatory from 24 to 27 July. Jazz Camp for Girls is a concept launched by JazzDenmark in 2014, and it aims to inspire young girls to get involved with jazz music and play different musical instruments.
The gender representation of music and jazz in particular has traditionally been strongly male-dominated, and women have often had the role of singer in bands. The idea behind the Jazz Camp for Girls is to offer the girls participating in the camp an exciting and safe environment where they can try different instruments, play in a band and compose music.
The girls' jazz camp is intended for girls and girl-identifying people. The camp is aimed at 10-15 year olds, but the exact age is not an obstacle to participation. The most important thing is the interest to try playing in a band and learn something new together. At the camp, two bands are formed from both beginners and more experienced musicians, so you can join regardless of experience. The only requirement is the desire to play together and meet new friends over music.
The teachers of the camp are bassist Kaisa Mäensivu, currently creating an international jazz career in New York, and Jussi Karhujoki, a teacher of electric bass and pop & jazz bands at the Turku Conservatory.
The program of the camp will be held at the Turku Conservatory (Linnankatu 60, Turku) from Mon 24 July to Thu 27 July from 10:00 to 15:00. On Thursday July 27 at 15:00 there will be a final concert where the camp participants will present the skills they have learned to the public. The concert will take place at a place in Turku to be specified later.
Registration for the camp is open until June 30 and the registration form can be found on the websites of both Jazz City Turku and Turku Sea Jazz. Participation in the camp is free of charge.
The Turku camp is organized in cooperation with Turku Sea Jazz, the Turku Conservatory and Finnish Jazz Federation. The activity is supported by Nordic Culture Fund. In addition to Denmark and Finland, Jazz Camp for Girls activities are organized in Sweden, Poland, Great Britain, and this year also in Canada and Turkey.
