The final concert of the season will be held at the Lavaklubi of the Finnish National Theatre on Saturday 27 January.

Hosted by vibraphonist Panu Savolainen, the extended autumn season of the Panurama club series will close on Saturday 27 January with the host’s own jazz trio, HERD, taking the stage. Having returned to energetic and melodic trio jazz last year, the tight-knit trio is back in a terrific gigging shape and ready to present their new compositions to the audience.

Composed of Panu Savolainen, bassist Mikko Pellinen and drummer Tuomas Timonen, HERD has been a fresh breeze in the Finnish jazz landscape since 2009. They are known for hosting their own club series in 2012-2014 at the very same venue, and for several special projects with different soloists, such as the album Jazzbasilli (Jazz Bug) made in collaboration with Finnish vocalist Aili Ikonen. As a trio they have released the album Live!! (2011), given shows in a number of countries including Mexico, Australia and Ethiopia, and won the prestigious European Jazz Competition in the Netherlands.

Having run since 2014, the monthly Panurama club series sees Savolainen joined by some of the brightest stars of the Finnish music life on surprising and unique one-off programmes. So far the guests include such names as Johanna Iivanainen, Matti Johannes Koivu, Vuokko Hovatta, Teppo Mäkynen, Maria Kalaniemi, Aili Ikonen, Minna Pensola, Timo Lassy, folk music ensemble JPP, Jukka Perko and Felix Zenger.

Panu Savolainen (b. 1990) is perhaps best-known for his European Jazz Competition-winning group HERD. The Lahti native was selected as the Pori Jazz Artist of the Year in 2010, and he has hosted the popular club series HERD and Panurama at the Lavaklubi of the Finnish National Theatre since 2012. He also acts as the Artistic Director of the Kalkkiranta Jazz Festival. 2015 saw Savolainen venture into a new area by compiling the programme for a special concert in honour of composer Toivo Kärki’s 100th anniversary. In the concert Savolainen and his trio fronted five leading Finnish symphony orchestras conducted by Jaakko Kuusisto. In 2017, he was awarded with the State Grant for Artists.
