The tour will see the duo play live in five Finnish cities this April. The programme will be comprised of material of their recent album; music written by Italians singer-composer Giorgio Gaber and lyricist Sandro Luporini.
This April’s Free Voices, Free Sounds tour will be about both – voices and sounds – when the Italian-French duo, formed by singer Maria Laura Baccarini and violinist Régis Huby, tour in Finland, Estonia and Latvia. On their recent album, albumin Gaber, io e le Cose, the group offer their interpretation of music of the Italian singer-composer Giorgio Gaber. In their versions, Italian musical tradition is handled with a touch of modern minimalism. On the Finnish soil, the duo will perform in Helsinki, Hämeenlinna, Turku, Loviisa and Tampere.
The album Gaber, io e le Cose (Abalone Production, 2015), comprises thirteen pieces written by Giorgio Gaber (1939–2003) for which Sandro Luporini (b. 1930) provided lyrics. In Baccarini and Huby’s hands the compositions gain a new, quiet, brooding power and minimalistic hypnotism: Baccarini’s rapturous vocalism and Huby’s sophisticated electroacoustic sonic worlds – created with the help of electronic violin, tenor violin, effects and a sampler – bend the originals to entirely new directions.
“My relationship to the pair Gaber and Luporini’s music is very personal,” says Baccarini. “Régis Huby does justice to the full raster of life that these pieces carry in an incredible way. Gaber died in 2003 and so far no one has been able to fill his shoes. Luckily his repertory lives and gains new forms every day; his pieces reflect Italian society, politics and human nature on a more general level.”
Maria Laura Baccarini is an Italian singer and actress, who has recently worked frequently with French contemporary jazz artists on projects that explore new modes of expression. Baccarini and the French violinist Régis Huby are not a new partnership, for have previously joined forces to perform Cole Porter’s music. Huby has performed in Finland thrice before: at Pori Jazz in 2004 as the first violinist of Quator iXi and in 2006 and 2011 on tour.
