A three-day summer camp organised by the Sibelius Academy’s jazz faculty brought Finnish and international A-listers together. Now they will display the fruits of their collaboration in a concert at Koko Jazz Club.
On Thursday 4 September Koko Jazz Club will host a rare treat of a concert as three bands formed by some of the best Finnish jazz musicians will be joined by a three much-acclaimed international stars. Saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, drummer Obed Calvaire and pianist Antonio Faraò, despite representing the best in their area, have been heard live in Finland very rarely. Eskelin is a long-standing American saxophone player whose unique phrasing and innovative, improvisatory approaches to composing have granted him wide acclaim. Calvaire, a young drummer from Miami, has made a career in jazz, pop and Latin music, and performed with such greats as Wynton Marsalis, Danilo Perez, Bobby Watson and Mark Murphy. Italian pianist Faraò, known for his style that fuses Afro-American and Mediterranean elements, has been dubbed as one of the influential and most skilled pianists of today.
The idea was born as the jazz faculty of Sibelius Academy invited the abovementioned guests to a three-day summer camp to co-operate with the teachers and bring something inspiring and refreshing from their repertoire to the Finnish jazz scene. A similar concept lies behind the Danish Summer Sessions, a week-long get-together for Scandinavian jazz artists with the aim of forming new projects and rehearsing together in Denmark.
The fact that the camp is organised by one music institute alone makes this Finnish version unique even in a global scale. The camp was organised this summer for only the second time, having been launched in 2011, when the guest list included the names of Jerry Bergonzi, Jesse van Ruller and Guillermo Klein. The international visiting teachers have praised the warm atmosphere and the camp’s contribution to the development of jazz by giving birth to projects that cross state and continental boundaries. In the Koko concert this same spirit is displayed by a stylistically versatile programme, in which each guest’s different musical background is present in individual ways. The Finnish artists joining the Eskelin, Calvaire and Faraò are Manuel Dunkel, Mikko Helevä, Ville Herrala, Kari Ikonen, Mikko Innanen, Jussi Kannaste, Tuure Koski, Jarno Kukkonen, Jussi Lehtonen, Sami Linna, Visa Mertanen, Riitta Paakki, Jari Perkiömäki, Ville Pynssi, Mia Simanainen, Tuomas Timonen and Teemu Viinikainen.
