Hietsu is Happening! brings warmth to the January frost when Spanish flamenco masters Juan Antonio Suárez and Victor Carrasco arrive as guests at the Pavilion on Sunday, January 28th.

Flamenco is best experienced up close, and this is a rare opportunity to experience top-notch flamenco in such an intimate setting. In the small hall of the Paviljonki, the atmosphere intensifies, and the intensity of the music becomes irresistibly palpable.

Composer and guitarist Juan Antonio Suárez “Cano” has collaborated with renowned dancers such as Sara Baras, Rocío Molina, and Belén Maya, composing several dance-theater pieces. Cano is a recognized master of modern flamenco guitar, with multiple recordings to his credit. His debut album Son de Ayer was released in 2008.

Víctor Carrasco, originally from Huelva, began his professional singing career in Andalusian flamenco peñas at the age of 16, after studying flamenco guitar for several years. Carrasco has performed at numerous festivals and theaters worldwide, collaborating with major figures in flamenco.

Old and individually successful bandmates, pianist Aki Rissanen and saxophonist Mikko Innanen, contribute to Hietsu is Happening's concert year with an entirely new program. The material created and rehearsed in mid-January at the Musicians' Union's residency in Western Uusimaa delves into fundamental questions of art and humanity, as well as trivial and irrelevant details.

Hietsu is Happening! brings ambitious and high-quality music to the audience with an approachable and laid-back atmosphere.

State-awarded Hietsu is Happening! is a boldly cross-disciplinary event series taking place at Hietsun Paviljonki in Hietaniemi, Helsinki (and sometimes in its vicinity). Its artistic curators are musicians Mikko Innanen, Petri Kumela, and Antti Lötjönen, who reside at Hietsun paviljonki. Artistic, high-quality, and creatively innovative, HiH! has brought together artists from different fields over its five-year history, from Vesa Vierikko to Tuuli Lindeberg, Anni Elif Egecioglu to Tuomari Nurmio, and from Han Bennink to Susana Santos Silva. HiH! provides a platform for performers to experiment freely and explore possibilities. In curating the event series, the boundaries between artistic genres, preconceptions, conventions guiding creation, and other barriers are re-examined: the essential goal is to enable an uncompromising dialogue between artists and arts while creating entirely new and novel compositions. Hietsu is Happening received the State Prize for Music in 2021.
