Trio HERD starts their Australian tour in Tasmania next week.
Finnish vibraphone trio HERD tours Australia in the turn of July and August for roughly two and a half weeks. The trio will perform at Devonport Jazz Festival in Tasmania, at Venue 505 club in Sydney, at Brisbane Jazz Club in Brisbane and at Paris Cat Jazz Club in Melbourne, among others. Some of the shows will see HERD joined by Aussie artists, including vocalists Martha Marlow and Michelle Nicolle. The group will also give workshops in band playing at local universities. HERD travels to Australia at the invitation of distinguished local promotor, Henk van Leeuwen, who has 20 years of experience in coordinating Finnish artists’ tours in Down Under.
Started in 2009, HERD is a jazz trio composed of vibraphonist Panu Savolainen, double bassist Mikko Pellinen and drummer Tuomas Timonen. Their fresh sound and tight-knit teamwork have won them herds of fans both in Finland and abroad, and the group has already performed at almost all Finnish jazz festivals. So far they have issued two albums: a trio effort Live!! (2009) and the acclaimed Jazzbasilli (2013), a collaboration album with vocalist Aili Ikonen. In 2010, HERD acted as the house band of the Pori Jazz Festival and the vibeist Panu Savolainen was awarded with the title Pori Jazz Artist of the Year. In July 2011 the group won the renowned European Jazz Competition, organised at the Dutch North Sea Jazz Festival. In 2012-2014 the group ran a popular club series at, for example, Lavaklubi, the downstairs venue of the Finnish National Theatre.
