Drawing from funk, jazz and rhythm and blues, the astonishing Kalle Salonen issues a new album this February. Like its predecessor, the sophomore, entitled Barracuda Man, comes out on the Helsinki-based label, Texicalli Records and will be available on vinyl, CD and in a digital format on 19 February.
The sophomore ventures into areas that the debut, Cat Slide, left off. Whereas the first album consisted of instrumentals only, this time, Salonen has invited first-class vocalists Marjo Leinonen, Johanna Försti and Hannu Pikkarainen, to feature on the disc. The sonic world has gained in depth and nuance, too.
“We have taken a decisive step towards jazz and blues and been inspired by the disco sounds of the 1970s,” say Salonen and Hannu Pikkarainen, the drummer of Kalle Salonen Band producer of the album.
Martti Heikkinen of Texicalli Records is thrilled about the new album, which he commends as having clearly raised the bar:
“Soundwise, the new album shows plenty of development when compared to the debut. And now with soloists appearing on a few tracks we are also expecting a good run on the radio.”
And not without grounds. Salonen’s song “Radioskugga” came second in Radio Helsinki’s poll for the summer hit of 2015 and was the most frequently played track in August. Definitely a hit, then.
The album launch show takes place at Helsinki’s Siltanen on 17 March and sees Salonen joined on stage by Marjo Leinonen and Johanna Försti. DJs Pertti Kurikka and Pyörätuoli-Antti will be playing records in the event.
