Pianist Jean-Marie Machado and accordionist Didier Ithursarry go on a rare tour in Finland and the Baltic states on 2 - 16 October. Their fellow countryman, guitarist Marc Ducret, joins them for a number of tour locations with his solo set
Agency Free Voices Free Sounds that specialises in Finno-French music exchange celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. This October, the pioneering proponent of French jazz in Finland presents duo Machado Ithursarry, composed of French pianist Jean-Marie Machado and accordionist Didier Ithursarry. The Baltic and Finnish tour takes place on 2 - 16 October and sees the duo celebrate their brand new album, Lua. Some of the shows are, in fact double bills, featuring a solo set from the acclaimed guitarist Marc Ducret, known for his highly intensive and experimental style. The two-week tour kicks off from Estonia, after which the Frenchmen head to Finland to play in Turku, Salo and Helsinki. After the Finnish shows, they will return to the other side of the Baltic Sea, closing their tour in Estonia and Latvia.
Jean-Marie Machado’s home is where various musical styles cross and blend together. He has always been ready to leap to the unknown and incorporate different cultural influences and styles into his playing without prejudice. In accordionist Didier Ithursarry, Machado has found a like-minded musical explorer with a knack for adventurous dialogue. The duo’s communication is telepathic and fresh, leaving plenty of room for poetry and emotion but without fearing to stretch their sonic palette towards dissonance and visionary, dream-like heights. Marc Ducret is a self-taught French guitarist who has developed an original and memorable style over the years. Both Ducret and the duo Machado Ithursarry are exciting examples of contemporary French free jazz expression.
On their Finno-Baltic tour Machado Ithursarry play material mostly from their recent album, Lua. The music of Lua seems to develop autonomically as if driven by a frenzied, unstoppable breath. Tender and vivid compositions do not fail to strike a chord, and the duo’s profound, tight-knit musical dialogue seems to enrich both the body and the mind.
