Drummer-producer Teppo Mäkynen’s new music reflects his fascination with electronic music. The trio project 3TM sees Mäkynen manoeuvre somewhere in the borderlands of acoustic jazz trio, samples and electronic sounds. Single “Five New Dukes” and music video for the piece have already been released and the new album Form comes out on CD and in digital format today. The strongly audio-visual theme of the project extends to the album sleeve, photographed by Mäkynen himself.
3TM, a new project from Teppo Mäkynen, one of the most buzzed-about makers of Finnish jazz, sees the versatile artist venture to yet another musical territory. On the upcoming album Mäkynen takes an acoustic jazz trio down the rabbit hole of electronic music. The project has also seen him in two new roles: as the director of the music video for single “Five New Dukes” and as the photographer of the album sleeve photos. In addition to the leader, the trio is composed of saxophonist Jussi Kannaste and bassist Antti Lötjönen.
Single “Five New Dukes” is a hypnotically looping, modern piece that, while utilising a traditional jazz trio, takes a step away from what is expected of contemporary jazz. Mäkynen’s music video for the track illustrates the visual world that has inspired the whole album: strong geometric shapes.

Form will be released on CD and in digital format on 20 October. The cassette and double vinyl edition, packed in a gatefold cover, will come out in late November and early December. The CD and the double LP come with a source book, which includes photographs taken by Mäkynen. The album launch show will take place at We Jazz Festival in Ääniwalli, Helsinki, on 9 December.
